Google seems to leave no stone unturned to provide its users an online Library of Alexandria. Though the company is best equipped and quite determine to digitalize each and every book of the world, there are some big hurdles which frequently hampering its way. What the company is going to do next much depends on Justice Department decisions, publishers and authors of the books.
The search giant can’t be accused of any lack in its ambition in this connection, as for the past many years the search project of the company is on their top priority, but it is also a project full of hurdles and bumps and most of these problems do not relate only to index, scan or display millions of books online, the main problems relate to legal concerns and intellectual property of these books.
It was in 2003 when the company revealed some details of its book –search project, and just two years after the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers filed lawsuit against them, the issue was resolved in 2008 and some settlements were made in this connection, and Judge Denny Chin is reviewing that copyright infringement lawsuits.
If this settlement is approved by the Judge, a big problem of copyright infringement to be resolved, but at the same time it will set back Google around $125m. It will allow the search giant to show the books that have been copyrighted as well as that have just been printed by other publishers.
Many authors have also show concern about the possible settlement, as they say it would allow Google to have monopolistic powers over online publishing.
